IEEE: A New Start

Hey everyone! My name is Eleanor Scott, and I am a sophomore in Electrical Engineering at the University of Memphis. As I look back at my time in high school, I remember I took a few items into consideration when looking at colleges.

Academics, Accreditation, and Internships

One thing I was not thinking about was the clubs that I could get involved with. While it should not be the priority, it does help when it comes to having a great college experience. Clubs can lead to many leadership opportunities, networking events, and friendships. One club that I joined in college is IEEE or the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and I had no clue what I was getting myself into.

I joined IEEE during my first semester, but the organization was mostly inactive. I knew not many people were active, but what I did not know was that there were so many other students who wanted the organization to return as I did. After several conversations with a friend I made through the STEM Ambassadors, our small group of Electrical and Computer Engineers set out to bring it back. Armed with a new president, a board who did not know how to run this club, and a lot of hope, IEEE has started to return to the University of Memphis. I was so nervous to join the board, but I could not be happier that I joined.

As secretary of our IEEE student section, I have been able to meet many professionals in the electrical and computer industry, plan events for engineering students, and gain many friends that I would not have met otherwise. Tailgating with the club, attending conferences, and just hanging out with fellow electricals are a few of the things that I have done in the short time that I have been a part of IEEE. It has been a wild ride, and I cannot wait for the upcoming days that the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers will bring.
